The novel is set in future Atlanta, a future where technology and magic work in mutually exclusive "waves". Shapeshifting abilities are from the Lyc-V virus. Vampires are people killed by a virus which allows necromancers to remotely "pilot" the body. The story aside, the world created by Andrews and her husband has a lot of depth and the differences from the "mainstream" make it all the more interesting. Kate Daniels is a Mercenary/ troubleshooter/ private investigator. Her guardian, Greg, has been killed and it is up to her to investigate and bring the killer to justice (i.e. kill them). I quite enjoyed the story. The story is interesting, the characters are relatable. Unfortunately, the series (and Kate Daniels) seems like an imitation of the Anita Blake series (pre-Narcissus in Chains). If I had never read the Anita Blake series I would have given this a 5 but in comparison I feel it only deserves a 4.5 stars.
