I liked this book. It was better than the last few Newbery books that I have read. I find the characters to be believable and real. Sara, the main character, is a young teenager, who like many teenagers feel dissatisfied with life and has self esteem issues. Adults try to teach her that she has value and that looks aren't important but she doesn't understand. In this story she goes through an experience that helps teach her what she can't understand coming from adults. The book isn't full of excitement but the story is still enjoyable, mostly because the characters are well done. Charlie, the mentally handicapped brother, is portrayed respectably and we learn to love him as Sara does.
