A British spy Cold War story. Extra emphasis on the cold. The story takes place in West Berlin where a double agent is shot dead trying to defect to West Berlin. The commander of the British Secret Service there, Leamas, is called back to Britan and is asked to return to the field to help muck up East German information. A trial takes place in East Germany, and Leamas shows how one person, Mundt, must be a double agent. During the trial, Leamas learns the 'true' scheme of the British secret service and tries to rescue the actual target. The book was ok, but dragged. Due to an extremely busy schedual, I had a hard time finding time to read it, even though the chapters were of shorter length. Not being a fan of spy novels, I was not totally enthralled in the plot.
