This is a story of cultural, racial, and sexual identity. It was written and set in the 1920s, when light-skinned African Americans "passed" as white by leaving their lives to enter a new social environment of privilege and entitlement. Larsen's candid novel addressed the issue in a time where it was rarely acknowledged. She explores not only the racial and social structures of the time, but also the psychology of those who are able to disrupt those structures.
