This book got me into period romance. I love this book. Although Ms. Coulter uses the same formula throughout the entire "Bride" series, the series of enjoyable. This one, however, will always be my favorite.
My esteem for this book rose when I read the following volumes in the trilogy, so it should come as no surprise that my second time through it was even more enjoyable than the first. Maps and character guide aside, Bakker doesn't hold the reader's hand much in introducing his world. So there's a great deal of content, especially early on, that was more potent this time -- plus there's some very interesting foreshadowing. This book is the beginning of something amazing, full of thought-provoking characters, sorcerous intrigue and dizzying philosophic depths. It's a rich feast, not suitable for every pallet, but well worth the journey.
