** spoiler alert ** Good story about the days when mental hospitals were common and people were committed for a lifetime. This is about a woman who is raped, runs off the with deaf mute man and has a baby in a basement. They find an older woman who keeps the baby when the authorities track the couple to her home. They take Lynnie back but Hohman escapes. The story alternates between Martha and the means she goes through to raise the child. The story alternates between chapters about Linnie, Martha, Hohman, and Kate, a worker from the school who is helpful to Lynnie. Kind of sad, kind of joyful in the end.
great read if you are a brown, first-generation american. even better if you were expected to attend an ivy league school.
