This was an amazing book for me. I had read a couple of travel books before, but this one has me hooked, at least on Bill Bryson travel books! I can't believe how skilled he is at mixing travel commentary, facts about a country, history of a country, and humor. I knew next to nothing about Australia before reading this book--at least now I know important facts, like that the most poisonous creature lives in the waters off of it, and there is a herd of camels descended from some that were brought to help with the building of the railroad. Now THOSE are things you don't find in your run-of-the-mill travel book!
I would recommend this book to young and old, because you are never too young to let your mind venture onto the yellow brick road. This book is wonderful and different in ways from the movie. It is about a young girl name Dorothy who is involved in a twister and her house takes flight and lands on a wicked witch. The people who live there are happy that she killed the witch, but do not know how she will get back home. They tell her to go to the land of Oz and he will help. Dorothy's journey begins and she meets all types of characters along the way who aid her in her search for home. This book was wonderful and I don't think anyone gets to old to read it!
