Choke is undoubtedly hilariously original and fearlessly written, but, and I'm a little ashamed to admit it, I think Palahniuk may have gone a little too far for me. It's not that I was offended by the morbid medical diagnoses or the graphic sex scenes (those were fine), but the characters were so dysfunctional that I couldn't relate to the depth of Victor's alienation from the real world or care about his probably very touching growth as a human being. But, it's still quick and entertaining, sure to make you question many aspects of your daily life (including what goes on in airplane bathrooms), and it will make you laugh out loud (although you won't be sure whether it's from amusement or shock).
