The winner of the Newbery this year is a fine historical novel for older children and young teens, too. Being from Kansas, I was especially interested in some of the characters. A small town of immigrants gave the author the opportunity to introduce many colorful people. Told in flashbacks to WWI, the story explains the recent past to a girl who worries about her wandering father's history and why he sent her to live in depression era Manifest, KS.
