Sure, JSF was overhyped and I shouldn't blame him for that. Sure, for a 23 year old, I suppose EiI is pretty remarkable, and yes, it moved me now and then. But literature is not a dog show. I shouldn't have to say to myself, "Well, isn't it amazing that he was only 23 when he wrote this?" Secondly, I caught on to his shtick early on. Throughout the entire book, when he is not patting his alter ego on the back for being so tortured and brilliant, JSF basically passes off as brilliant snippets of wisdom what is in fact simply inversion of norms. For example, death is birth, love is hate, war is peace. My friend Faran summarized my reaction nicely on her blog by wondering if any writer of our generation can make a significant piece of booklength fiction that has nothing to do with the holocaust.
