I got this book for the Amazon Kindle (for free) about a year ago and finally took the time to read it. After reading reviews on Amazon/Goodreads I figured it would be a great book. When I finally read it, I didn't like it very much. Sure, it was an okay book and I read through it, but I just didn't feel like I would ever want to re-read this book again.
Too much information! Fifty (?) revolutions in fifty years in less than 800 pages. I can't keep this shit straight. Gave up after 150 pages.
My first novel.
Very accurately, a critical essay on this novel is called "Grotesque Naturalism." The amazing thing Norris does here is describe the disgustingly banal in simple language; this makes it all the more "grotesque" and accomplishes its goal perfectly. Norris depicts life from a distance, equally regarding all aspects. I found that I either had to find every character at fault, or none of them. I still haven't decided which - or if such a decision is really necessary. The story made me cringe at points, but I can't get it out of my head.
