I found it to be pretty realistice even though there is controversy over the writer. He pretty much nailed it on the head from what I can see. Of course I have never been addicted to illegal drugs but am a recovering SMOKER 3 years smoke free so it is kinda the same thing.
I like the Time Patrol element of this novel, making sure time tourists don't cause paradoxes and historical changes. I've not seen time travel approached from a tourist aspect before. I also liked the creative ending. I can't say I've seen such an ending before, so nicely done. However, I think Silverberg forgot he was writing one of his sci-fi novels rather than one of his sex novels, and made this a bit rated X in parts. The ideas behind the story get at least 4 stars, but the creepy incestuous parts take it down several notches. Ew.
Here's what I think happened ... after the success of Water for Elephants (a very enjoyable story), Sara Gruen's publisher/editor or whoever insisted she pump out another book while her name was still fresh in everyone's minds. BIG MISTAKE. This book was a complete waste of my time. With a disjointed, awkward and many times pointless story line, under-developed characters and absolutely no charm, I could not find any redeeming quality of this book.
Taylor is a Southern writer, but more specifically of the border South that commingles with the Midwest. But the subject of Summons to Memphis is a universal one -- parents aging, adulthood, fathers and daughters, fathers and sons. There's an intense focus to the style of the writing that feels by turns quiet and humble and urgent and pure. The narrative fairly crackles with the need to be said, a need that feels as immediate as the need for a cigarette at a family funeral. OK, that's just for you ex-smokers out there. The rest of you, insert your vice here. If you've had a parent or grandparent age out of their independence (especially a viciously independent relative), this is a good one.
