I found Lee D. Baker's collection of essays pertinent vignettes on the role of anthropology in shaping popular American conceptions of race and culture. Baker lifts the curtain on the great anthropological fissure at the turn of the century which sent African Americans and Native Americans down different political paths. Developments in anthropology simultaneously preserved an "out-of-the-way" (albeit narrow definition of..) Indian while seeking to eradicate the "in-the-way" negro. A short, well-written read.
