Started reading this at night---bad idea..couldn't put it down till I was finished---wee hours of the morning. This book is definitely not a light-hearted, fast, easy read. It's not difficult to stay engrossed in the story, either. Set during the Great Depression, a young man loses his bearings for a while and finds himself employed in a circus. Ms Gruen either did a lot of research, and, while the events are not always easy to read about, it was interesting, but disturbing, to learn about some practises that were carried out to save money for the circus. I got caught up in the way the book was written, too. The old man experiencing old age and a 'retirement home', and him remembering his youth. Best way to tell this story.
This is by far one of the best books ever written. It has an orphan, a rich man, a crazy hidden wife, and enough secrets for anyone to handle. It's like the best soap opera all boxed up in several hundred pages. I can't even begin to describe how amazing this book is. It begins with an orphan who is terribly treated by an aunt who doesn't love her, sent to live in a boarding school so strict she barely eats, and ends up governing a silly little girl who happens to be a relative of an extremely handsome older man. I'm not telling you more, so READ IT.
