Fascinating and disturbing, this book left me reeling and stayed with me for many days after finishing it. It's been a long while since I've encountered a book that I couldn't put down, but I sped through this one in two days. It truly does read like an edge-of-your-seat fiction novel. It details the events that occurred during the 2009-2010 winter holiday. At that time, a headline briefly appeared about a suicide bombing that killed 9 CIA officers at a forward operating base in Afghanistan. The CIA believed the bomber was working for them as a double agent and had arrived at the base at the invitation of the CIA. He was supposed to deliver information on the whereabouts of one of Al Qaeda's top leaders. The question on everyone's mind in the aftermath was "how did a suicide bomber manager to fool his handlers and get so close to so many agency officers?". This book offers an answer. By the end of this read, I felt so very sorry for all of the families involved. With each of Warrick's revelations I found my jaw on the floor and an uneasy feeling of dread growing in my mind. This story is real, which makes the book's tale all the more worrisome. While the majority of Warrick's sources are anonymous, his reputation as a journalist at the Washington Post and his interviews with surviving family members make it likely his telling of events is accurate. Regardless of your political views or opinions about the agency - I promise this book will prove illuminating and potentially frightening.
