A fast read, but not an overly illuminating or thought provoking book. I imagine Chrichton spent a couple weeks on research, and then blew through the writing of it in a weekend. That said, it does call Ulysses to mind as either an influence, or as homage to it. Now, having realized that it was taken from his hard drive after his death, it makes more sense. I'm not sure it was truly finished, or even meant for publishing.

Probably a must-read, if only for the fact that this delves into the lives of the minimum-wage worker. The author doesn't attempt to distract the reader with an over-abundance of quotes, statistics, or other things. She tells us of what she sees, what she thinks, and leaves the rest up to the reader. The section about the home cleaners is probably the saddest and most bizarre. The waitressing chapter is probably my favorite though. =)
