Ah, the intrigue and mystery of uneducated medieval folks. The perspective of Potzsch's fully drawn main characters keeps this book rolling. A credible story, soundly based on very specific history and place saves it from some of the obvious cliches. No stunning prose, but a solid tale that keeps you reading late into the night. From my view as a novelist it's far better than a lot of historical fiction because there is more than one 'round' character, and the hangman Kuisl is an enigma worth exploring.
