This one I did enjoy more than the first book, but not as much as the second one.

I haven't read a Robert K. Massie book since Peter the Great when I was 16. The book fascinated me and captured my imagination for a long time. I own Nicholas and Alexandra but have never cracked it open. Dreadnought, being a Christmas gift from a couple years back stood on my shelf, equally forlorn until a couple of months ago. Now I remember why the first Massie book I read kept me so enthralled. His attention to detail is brilliant in that he picks small details that are actually interesting - like Bismarck having a large bottle of dark beer with every meal. His thoroughness is unrivaled in my opinion (this book covered roughly 40 years in the buildup to WWI from the English and German perspective over 900 pages). While all this may sound daunting, he is actually a good enough historian that his books read like a novel and you can easily sit down and read 50 or 100 pages in one go. Keep in mind however, that this book is very focused which is also its greatest fault. Everything is told from the perspective of Naval buildup between Germany and England leading to total war (in fairness the continental arms race is mentioned a few times) which would make sense considering the title. However the predominance given to England and Germany as the two greatest Naval powers is given to them in all facets of the European power balance. Italy is rarely mentioned, Austria and Russia are dismissed as rotten and ineffectual and, here I have the greatest problem, France is completely dismissed from the beginning as the obvious loser to Germany without British aid. Their politics are ignored except when pleading with either Germany or Britain for reprieve or aid of some kind. Considering the bravery with which they fought and the fact that the French, not the British, stopped the dagger pointed at their heart on the banks of the Marne makes this bias a little hard to swallow. It is also interesting that England's slippery avoidance of treaties, that at times makes her seem less than noble, is glossed over while Germany's web of alliances and political intrigues are made to seem despicable. Likewise Britain is portrayed as hopelessly drawn into the war due to German violation of Belgian neutrality. I find it hard to believe that the details of a 25+ year old operational plan for war (Schlieffen Plan) remained unknown this long to other powers and that the move through Belgium came as a complete surprise to the British government. But then a subtle bias hardly ruins a book for me. The length is of course daunting but then as I mentioned it reads well--it just may take you a while :) If you have the time and are drawn to details, royal, and political intrigues and the causes of war then pick this one up.
