An extremely well written book that I read on a whim and knew almost nothing about going into (despite a vague understanding that it was a well known book was was considered to be well regarded.) As I said, the writing itself was what kept me engrossed in this book, it was relatively short and the writing was extremely well done. The book itself was somewhat sad, and the subject matter a bit weird. The book follows an English butler's 6 day motoring trip through England in the 1950s. However, most of the story is actually the butler reminiscing about his decades as a butler at an important lord's house. Most of the reminiscing covers the butler's struggling to put sense to what his life was worth in regards to a housekeeper that he was once close to and to his previous employer. I had problems really getting into the protagonist's frame of mind at times, he seemed a bit hollow at points even though I understand that was somewhat of the point of the narrative. Either way, an interesting book and it was a good read.
