** spoiler alert ** It has obviously been a long time since I read or tried to read this book, and I don't know whether it's time to give it another chance even though I can't see how it is likely to be to my taste. I remember vividly making the mistake of reading the foreword to the edition I was reading, which gave away a huge spoiler in order to make a point about the structure of the book. I was utterly unable to identify with any of the characters in the book or appreciate the wuthering passions of Cathy and Heathcliff, and I was turned off the Brontes for years. I did eventually read and love The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, The Professor, and Shirley. The spoiler revealed that Cathy dies at the mid-point of the book. When I started reading I found Cathy to be so unpleasant that I kept flipping ahead to find out whether she was finally, finally dead.
