I felt like this novel was really missing something. The ending was especially unusual. It basically amounted to 'they all lived happily ever after,' but with a lot of extra embellishments. I wasn't exactly sure about the motives of any of the morally reprehensible characters in the story either. Why does William's brother despise him so much? Why does Zoraïde pursue him romantically? Hunsden is an absolute cypher to me as well. I suppose these characters make an internal sense. They certainly stay true to their own natures. It just feels like the whole world is supernaturally against William, for no real reason that I can discern. But he also escapes all of their clutches so easily. I felt the novel lacked tension. What may have added to my puzzlement is that the cover of my copy called it a 'disturbing love story.' So I guess I kept waiting for William to do something bizarre to Frances. He did have a strange attitude towards her, but I think they were referring to the Zoraïde relationship. William is such a strange stiff character though, and his at times high-handed attitude towards Frances does seem a bit disturbing at times.

I didn't follow all of this, but didn't expect to either. This is a book of excerpts from Chodron's other works and each is meant to be read alone. I may borrow this book again after I've read some more in depth materials. Seems like it's a handy reference to have around.
