I could write a dissertation about this book but I will keep my comments brief. I really enjoyed this book and despite myself I like Mike Engleby, though I don’t know why. He is a hyper-critical, anti-social pedant who I cannot sympathize or identify with but for some reason I want everything to work out for him. Without exposition we learn who Mike Engleby is not through his interactions with other people but almost entirely from his own thoughts and recollection, which we discover may be distorted and unreliable. This is a very well written novel but has a brief (maybe 50-60 pages or so) slow period 2/3 of the way in, read through it, it is well worth it.
