The photos in this book of California and its coast are astounding. I was particularly drawn to the high-resolution images of what Los Angeles looked like in 1981 (a much different skyline than there is today) and of Marineland. Remember Marineland? This was a good book that contained some interesting interviews and essays and some even more interesting photographs. For all the complaining that I sometimes do, I am very fortunate to live, work, and play in this great state of California. It truly is like no other.

Even though Stephen King is a cocaine snorting asshole (see: prolific writers)and litters his pages with arrogant little notes like "always paperclip your manuscripts," you'll want to put up with him a bit. He's got some pretty good, solid advice for people "who really want to write." It's not your typical Artist's Way touchy feely (vague)advice. Real, concrete recommendations for creating a real live, breathing story. Oh, right, he also says don't bother writing if you have no talent...about fifty pages in. The he continues to write a further 200+ pages, presumably to those who have talent. But then what's the likelihood of any writer, wannabe or not, reading a book on writing to confront that greatest of fears:sucking it big time. I don't know, maybe you're self-aware. I took it as a big red waving flag. Damn it King! You got me again.
