I loved this story, tragic as it was. I feel the ending was sort of rushed, or maybe it just seemed that way since the summer went on for pretty much the whole book and suddenly you were at the end and hearing about Nico's adult life. It was an enjoyable story though. The author is one of those that I find has an amazing way of making you really feel something by the ingenuity of her words. Some of the lines that stood out to me were: "They'd been dreaming about her, too. The mystery of death, the riddle of you how you could speak to someone and see them every day and then never again, was so impossible to fathom that of course we kept trying to figure it out, even when we were unconscious." "I hated it when my mother talked about her parents. It depressed me that she still missed them. It was worse now, because it made me realized that missing someone could last an entire lifetime." "People wanted me to believe that their suffering had a purpose, if only so that they could offer me the distilled wisdom of their experience." "But actually," he said, "the strangest part is that she was alive and now she isn't. That's the thing I can't get past. I can't get my head around it. The absence. How someone can be here one minute, and the next minute, they're gone. You tell them everything in your life, and then they...can't be reached. Unlisted number forever. I keep thinking that this little...episode, this little trick will end, and she'll be back again and it will all have been some cruel joke." "Whenever she found anything she loved, she couldn't enjoy it unless the whole world fell in love with it, too." "It makes sense that birth and death are what people have in common.
