This book depicts small town life at the turn of the century. "What will people think?" is always on their minds. It tells the story of a boy coming of age and an old man scandalizing the town by marrying a woman half his age just months after his wife dies. I think this book is a great portrayal of life during that time. It is hard to believe it took place over 100 years ago. The entire story is written in the colloquialism of the south during that time, which makes it even more real. So many times after reading a chapter, I would find myself thinking in the same colloquialism! This is one of those books filled with so many great stories, it keeps your attention all through out. And it appeals to every emotion - action, romance, humor, drama. An all-around great book!

This is my second favorite Sedaris book; if you have not read David Sedaris and I am friends with you, I have done something wrong.
