The book is set during the last few months of the school year and Kate, a senior, is anxiously awaiting to hear whether she has been accepted to college. Kate Malone is not a typical teen. She is ranked 3rd in her class, she is a member of the National Honor Society and is on the cross-country track team. Kate also takes care of her 14 year old brother, Toby, who is asthmatic and runs most of the household. Kate’s mom died of a sudden illness when Kate was only in 4th grade. Her dad is a minister, who is very involved with his congregation. He doesn’t seem to have much time for the daily ups and downs in his family. Kate’s boyfriend, Mitch, is headed for Harvard in the fall. She also has a small, close group of equally high-achieving friends. Then, two events happen simultaneously that change Kate’s life forever. The first is that the house down the street burns down. Kate’s father, in his ministerial role, invites two of the people who lived in the house to move in with the Malone family; Terri, a teenager and Mikey, a toddler. The problem is that Terri is an outcast at school. Her family is poor, she is belligerent and always in physical fights with other classmates. No one seems to be able to get along with her. On top of this, Terri steals from Kate is surly to be around; even when Kate is nice to her. When this situation mixes with a second event, the combination is a catalyst that will set into motion a string of surprising and even shocking events that will forever change the trajectory of Kate’s life. Will Kate end up at M.I.T? How is her life so altered by Terri and Mikey? What happens during those last few months of her senior year? This book was written by the same author who wrote Chains and Speak. (In fact, Melinda from Speak makes a cameo appearance in Catalyst). It is a really great read and belongs on the shelves of any library. It is a book that is full of twists and turns that you won’t see coming. It is a book about how even smart kids that seem to have everything don’t always. It is a book about sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we can’t control life. It is about having an intellectual pursuit that is a passion when you are 18. It is about dealing with religion and good and bad, and it even has young romance thrown in for good measure. A must read!

This is a classic. Conrad's prose is beautiful. For those reasons it should be read by all. However, it might be helpful to also read Chinua Achebe's essay on it as a companion peice. Look it up!

I didn't really find this book that interesting. And what's up with the name Boy? I didn't like the name for some reason. And the story was just not working for me.
