there's an interesting/critical review of Omnivore's Dilemma in the Atlantic that attacks Pollan's chosen voice and is bothered by his lack of interest in respect towards animals. i would argue that Pollan is very aware of his audience, knows the low level of respect that interest in animal welfare has in society, and doesn't care about fighting that battle in this book (and frankly couldn't even if he wanted to, because it would disintegrate his ethos). there is certainly a romanticism of getting back to nature and nature-centered thinkers, but it didn't bother me because i like that stuff. whether one likes Pollan's voice or not, there are a million reasons why people should care about the information contained in this book.
