This is a true story of a young man in Wyoming. Colton was a slow learner and was often made fun of by his peers. He would be called "retard", and although this hurt him he always found a way to shrug it off. His mantra was "Mind over Matter, I don't mind so it don't matter". Colton was loved by his parents, siblings, and a few friends. His best friend Jake would be by his side at all times. Colton was always on the fast track, he never slowed down. A good example of this was a question he put to his teacher. "Well, ma'am I was just wondering if you could talk twice as fast, and then we'll get 'er done twice as fast, and then we can get out of here in half the time." Colton was always willing to help anyone out and if he noticed someone having a bad day he would go into a dance to make them laugh. He just would nver let anything get him down. The reader sees Colton growing up and leaving high school, but determined to get an equivalency diploma. He realizes that his best chances in life is to work on the oil rigs of Wyoming. This is where the story takes a turn in the the writer tells of the horrible conditions of the oil rig workers were sujected to. There was little if any safety practiced and the company had little, if any, responsibility for their workers. Colton marries and has a young son. His wife tries to take him off the rigs and does succeed for a short period. However, the money and the work sends Colton back to the rigs. If you enjoyed "The Glass Castle" and "The Tender Bar", you will find that this book might very well be better than both of them. This is a true American story that takes place in an area that is known for a hard life and a people that accept their way of life and make no excuses.
