I don't consider myself a scholar of the Alcott family or of the era in which they lived, though I read almost all of Louisa May Alcott's children's books and a couple of biographies when I was younger. What irks me most about March is that I think Geraldine Brooks gets the derivation of "Marmee" wrong. The March girls are respectful, and I believe it's unlikely and out of character for them to refer to their father as "Father" and their mother by what Brooks thinks is her first name. I think that "Marmee" is simply L. M. Alcott's rendition of the "ah" sound of the family's New England accent; as another example of this spelling in Little Women, Meg's son Demi calls his father "Parpar." (Katharine Hepburn got the accent right when playing Jo in the 1933 movie of Little Women: "Mahhmee.") Using a well-known, often public domain work as a springboard for a new work is a great writing exercise, but I think the derived works are better able to stand on their own when the source material is a folk or fairy tale with no canonical version, rather than a source whose author is well known. March should have been relegated to something like fanfiction.net.
