Wickedly (and quite often smuttily) hilarious. I laughed and laughed. Oh yes -- also the best novel written in the English language. William Faulkner read it yearly throughout his adult life, and I can see why. If I only had three books, this would be one of them. If you can find an Arion Press edition, buy it for the woodcut prints in it -- really beautiful.

Mysteries with female detectives are my potato chips - I speed through them and then feel a little sick afterwards. I like this Tess Monaghan and her Baltimore. Lippman isn't afraid to show some of the grittiness of the city while also showing its neighborhoods and the working people in them. I look forward to reading more of the series (and they're winging their way to me from Paperbackswap as we speak!).

One of my favorite story subjects in novels and writing on the British Occupation of India. At times very dark, but a great example of Orwell's talent as a writer.
