First in a series of three, this is the story of a young girl and her daemon as they find themselves caught up in the search for a mysterious substance called Dust. They meet all kinds of characters along the way, some who become great friends and aids, like the armored bear and the Texas Hot Ar balloon pilot, and the beautiful witch, Serafina Pekkala and some who are frightening beyond reason like Mrs. Coulter and her golden monkey. I liked Lyra the young heroine, because she reminds me of myself as a little girl, running barefoot and madly all through our apartment complex inventing all kinds of adventures with my friends, completely transformed by our imaginations! I could definitely have been friends with her! Anyone who likes adventure, mystery, suspense, science fiction, or fairy tale worlds with fantastic heroes and heroines, who make daring escapes will love this book! Great for many ages, from about 6th grade strong readers to adults! It's NEW in the library! FIC PUL children's section.
