I love literature that sneaks up and bitch slaps you. This book is funny, visually rich and surprising. Take the time to get to know these characters and you'll be rewarded. They are dodgy as hell, from diverse classes--and so very British. The story is a postmodern take on film noir, you might say.

I actually enjoyed this book a LOT more than I thought I would. I generally steer clear of the books that EVERYONE is reading---I never read the Da Vinci code---but this turned out to be a very really nicely told story about a girl looking at her family from the afterlife, and the ways in which her death affected their lives.
