** spoiler alert ** This is a really great book, dealing with the struggles of an adolescent girl just starting high school. However, she starts high school with a unique cloud hanging over her head. She was raped at a party that summer. She called 911, but by the time she was on the line with the operator, she was too scared and froze. Of course they tracked the location and sent the police. They police came and busted the party. Nobody knows what happened to Melinda, all they know is that she is that dumb bitch who got an awesome party busted. The reason I only give it three stars is this... Throughout the book we see her using avoidant coping strategies. She secludes herself and will hardly talk to anybody about anything. Finally she tells her former best friend about it in a note, but her friend, who is dating the guy, doesn't believe her. Then, you get to the last five pages or so of the book. The guy who rapes her corners her in a closet and is going to rape her again. What does she do? She screams, smashes a mirror, and takes one of the broken shards of glass and holds Andy at bay by slicing into his neck, just enough to make him shed a drop of blood. What the hell? This girl who can't even talk to anybody all year (for the duration of the 200-something page book) then in the last five pages, she suddenly, miraculously has the strength to do that? I just found the sudden happy ending to be a bit unbelievable. It was like Anderson was thinking, "Hmm...this is getting kind of long and isn't really going anywhere. I need to end this and I need to end it now, but how? Oh, I got it! She cuts him with a piece of broken mirror!"
