I was recently called to be a Den Leader for some of my ward's Cub Scouts and I created a "get to know you" poster for the boys to fill in so I could get to know them better. I felt like I needed to fill one out myself but I found myself stumped on "Favorite Book." There are so many books that I LOVE. Pride and Prejudice has weighed in recently, Jane Eyre moved me more as an adult than it did when I first read it as a teenager, and Anne of Green Gables holds a very special place in my heart. Then there are all my favorite sci fi and fantasy: Dune, The Hobbit, and of course, Ender's Game. For years I would list Ender's Game as my favorite book because it was the one that turned me on to science fiction, and though I can't be sure, I don't know that I would have gotten a degree in Electrical Engineering if I hadn't been such a huge fan of science fiction. I know I'm writing a bunch on seemingly unrelated topics, but if anyone is still reading, please don't think I'm a complete psycho. After pondering my favorite books yesterday, last night I had this incredible dream about Ender's Game. It was awesome! I was right there with Ender and his team when he said, "The enemy's gate is down." So yes, I think I still have to say that Ender's Game is my favorite book. Don't get me wrong, there are things that detract from it, there's some bad language and some crude points, I can't recommend it to everyone. But it still affects me after all these years. My paperback copy is some special edition with an introduction by Orson Scott Card. He talks about getting ideas for military strategy from reading non-fiction like a three volume "Army of the Potomac" by Bruce Catton. He includes an excerpt from letter from a soldier in the first Gulf war who really related to Ender's Game. It's fascinating. I'm also proud to say my copy is autographed. So there you have it, my favorite book. I think I'll go and make comments on some more of Orson Scott Card's stuff (I can't believe I hadn't listed them before.)
